Yes, but all of the other ones aside from Haspids are fast and can fly. That's why I said slow and melee.

When I read in the HoMM3 HD Mod patch notes that...

5.3 R4 -> 5.3 R5 (07/20/2022)

[+] Changes for compatibility with the future version of HotA.

...I get a bit excited. I've been playing HoMM3 quite obsessively lately, hoping we don't have too many more months or years for the next HotA release. I'm very grateful for the high quality and free content, just very eager in anticipation!

This patch note has been in most of the patches in the last months but I agree with you that it’s a good sign for all of us waiting for the update.

Same! I'm hopeful for a September release (to help fill in the wait for Loki S2), but I don't imagine it will be any later than New Years 2024.

I assume you mean watch that show? (???)

Listen, not to derail this thread too hard, but Loki's my last straw with Disney+ at this point. Marvel TV's been slacking. Secret Invasion was literally embarrassing. But, I thought the first season of Loki was absolutely fantastic even if it didn't do much with its premise. This second season looks like it's going to lean into the time-travelling buddy cop stuff and general weirdness more. It looks really good. I'm hopeful.

I know HotA isn't in the habit of changing too much in the HOMM3 formula, but I think we can all agree that Eagle Eye is a useless skill. Heck, Greg Fulton himself said it was a terrible secondary skill in his #6 newsletter.

To quote the newsletter in question:
Quote:
When HoMM3 was in development, did the team think Eagle Eye would be a viable or competitive secondary skill?  I've seen players say it was meant to be a bad one to balance out with the good ones, but things like the boosting artifacts, a few pre-made Seer Huts and Witches high learning chance tell me otherwise.

Regarding Eagle Eye... it was a holdover from HoMM2.  While we knew it was a ‘lesser’ skill, we didn’t consider it ‘useless’.  In hindsight, I should have cut it, but like I said... it was a legacy skill from HoMM2, and there was a desire to maintain some consistency between HoMM2 and HoMM3.  So, to directly answer your question, we never intentionally created ‘bad’ skills to balance out ‘good’ skills.

Originally, the concept of Eagle Eye was simple. An Allied Hero ‘sees’ an Enemy Hero use an unlearned Spell, and upon seeing it, the Allied Hero learns the Spell. In practice, it didn’t work out so well.

First, there was only a ‘chance’ to the learn the spell. Second, an Allied Hero typically fought and defeated lesser Enemy Heroes, thus rarely saw a Spell the Hero didn’t already know. Third, Enemy Towns are not necessarily difficult to acquire, thus Enemy Spells are not necessarily difficult to acquire. Also, big maps tend to give plenty of opportunities for learning ‘other’ Spells.

I’ve given Eagle Eye a lot of thought, but ultimately... I’m discarding its equivalent. Once it is gone, I strongly doubt most people will miss it.

It's not hard to see why Eagle Eye sucks. Eagle Eye only works in battles between heroes, doesn't always work due to RNG, only works if you win the fight (at the pro level, winning a major hero battle usually means GG), and is made redundant if you just take an enemy town and use its Mage Guild. Additionally, due to Witches having a higher chance of getting it (among other hero classes), it further compounds the issues with the Fortress by making it more likely for their heroes to receive useless skills. Not to mention the three artifacts that center around Eagle Eye are worthless in practical situations; you'd only really want them so you can sell them or if they're part of a Seer quest.

Since HotA already replaces Resistance with Interference, I think it'd be acceptable if Eagle Eye were either replaced or reworked. This could involve replacing a few heroes who have EE as a specialty, but I don't think that'd be too problematic. HotA does replace Thorgrim, after all.

If the rework approach is taken, I have a way to go about it. This is a rough draft, so it's not set in stone.

Eagle Eye
When an enemy hero casts a spell, your hero has an X% chance to cast it immediately afterwards on a random valid target at no MP cost. Potency depends on your hero's Spell Power and skill in Air/Earth/Water/Fire Magic. If both heroes have Eagle Eye, a copied spell cannot itself be copied.
Basic: 20% chance, copies up to level 1 spells
Advanced: 30% chance, copies up to level 2 spells
Expert: 40% chance, copies up to level 3 spells

This would still play to the "copycat" angle that Eagle Eye is supposed to be, but makes it far more useful. Copying your enemy's spells after they cast them would be very handy, especially if they hit you with a Mass Slow or use some other impactful spell.

There's a few stipulations I have for it, though. Firstly, it cannot copy level 4 and level 5 spells. This is deliberate since copying an Armageddon would be obnoxious, as would copying Resurrection, Summon Elemental, etc. Since it'd be unable to copy level 4 and 5 spells, it would also give your opponent an option to play around it. Second, if both heroes have Eagle Eye, you can't copy an already-copied spell. This would be to avoid back-and-forth spell-slinging, which would be annoying. Third, the copied spell doesn't cost any MP. This would be to make it more useful for heroes with low Knowledge, and to prevent Eagle Eye from draining your MP unintentionally (i.e. you might want to save it for a stronger spell).

This rework to Eagle Eye could be a lot more useful, though I do acknowledge that it could be a tad RNG-based. Even so, I think it'd be better than the existing Eagle Eye.

I have actually been maining an Eagle Eye specialist for the last two maps I have played, just for fun.
It was Geon and Sanya and they learned exactly 0 and 1 spell (Frost Ring) during an XL+underground map.

I actually like the skill in concept and I wish it was better, but as it is right now it is very close to completely useless.

I have thought about removing the skill and artifacts and giving the 8 Eagle Eye heroes something at least a little more useful, but I'm not sure yet...

Oh and Eagle Eye also gets ruined by heroes with Scholar and the 4 tomes.

Yep. The existence of Scholar and the tome artifacts doesn't help Eagle Eye's case, rendering EE redundant 99.99% of the time.

The only scenario where you could make a case for EE being a decent pick is on a hero that is solely there to guard one town and never leave, but even then town portal and scholar render that useless.

But EE for walkthrough.. Not main heroes in 3DO maps, etc A very hard.. Think about many heroes give their troops to EE, and EE hopes Diplomacy, for example and against enemies.. AI can play well.. Then Scholar is waiting for EE.. I don't recommend you play EE, but walkthrough, so you can play Elite.. This link Elite by Ghost, thanks

EDIT

Russian forum talked about Elite, but.. Ok you need Google translator..

Imo, EE should only be replaced by another weak skill such that the quality of the skill pool is similar to the current pool.

A way to rework it to keep its random aspect could be by having a chance to increase rewards from clearing resource banks, picking up extra resources, an extra artifact from DUs, etc.

This is a meh skill have on a main hero but a nice one to have on a secondary hero.

Would be it a bliss if technology development stopped at mark 2001? Really, why do we need 512-core processors, if we would be more than happy to play newest addons to HoMM3 on good old 1 core? I mean, what is the ultimate purpose of progress? We have what year now? 2023? Still, HoMM 3 is two heads and five inches above current indie wanna-be-like TBS projects.

I always thought fixing Eagle Eye and other useless abilities is by buffing them. Eagle Eye doesn't learn you anything useful so nobody picks it, but if there was a small chance it can learn you something like Fly, Dimension Door, Water Walk, Town Portal, it will become one of the most desired skills.

What does technology have to do with anything regarding game quality? Even if in the year 1999 we had technology like in the 1970s and in the year 2019 we had the technology of the 1980s, gaming would have still been commercialized at some point and games would have become like they are now - lazy, broken, bugged, boring, lacking substance and so much the same and built on top of a template to keep it safe that 50 different games will feel like the same game, which is happening nowadays.

For example - overhyped garbage like The Witcher 3 or Fallout 4, which should be so much different, feel exactly the same in how boring, generic, linear, uninspired, vapid they feel.

I do think technology has a lot to do with it. Commercialism only goes as far as technology allows. "Super 3D graphics and dynamic gameplay" is made for Youtube videos which drives sales, etc.

In the old times you picked games from static images and even then you knew it was not actual gameplay (like Heroes 3 CD cover).

So there is now the incentive to only make flashy-looking games or games good for youtube.

You, probably, didn't play The Witcher 3. If this game is a garbage, I don't know which one is not.

I did'nt really like the Witcher 3 either, at least not it's combat.
But to be fair I like very few modern games. Final Fantasy 15 was awful and FF have been awful for a long time. (Don't know about 16, I heard it should be pretty good.)
