If there's anything I'd wish from a Civ game is multi layered maps. Just like Heroes has Subterranean layers. I don't think subterranean layers can work with Civ, but I think that some other worlds would do. For example, when the Space Ship is completed, it should launch and open another world. Or maybe a Space conquest Civilization, I dunno, I just feel the game should be more diverse in terms of map. One big map becomes boring after a while, but if there would be other realms to explore I'd look forward to that and plan some expansions.

Bottom sea colonies + orbitals would be just fine with me. Like Call to power did. it was rough and unpolished, but there was so much fun into potentially opening two more areas to conquer. Come to think of it, subterranean could possibly work too.

If you like stuff like that, Eador and Planet Annihilation have pretty great concepts for it.

In CtP you could colonize every pixel, create huge water cities, create floating cities, it was exhaustive. However, it was just for the fun, because when you are able to build those sky cities, you already won the game (those modern plasma tanks were invincible). I miss those clear, beautiful and simple graphics where you could optimally space your cities so work every inch on the map. It was almost orgasmic to end the game with 100+ cities, all fully developed.

OD, you know what's a good thing to do? Not to buy the game after it's just been released, play the cracked version, and buy the complete edition if you think the game is worth it.

That's how I do it at least. My money's limited and I can't take risks buying something that I might not like.

Sorry, not my style.  I research the games well enough before-hand and certainly have an idea of what I am getting myself into.  I was absolutely going to buy Beyond Earth.

Only 58% of steam reviews are positive? What? Is it really that bad?

People had unrealistic expectations and tend to give scathing reviews.

Yeah like me for example. I had the expectation that a canon can fire same distance once it is set, instead I get 3 range vs my territory, and 1 range vs enemy. Very useful.

I do not see the appeal of stacks, mind you I was really, really annoyed with the logistics when I started. Once I got into it I started utilizing the terrain better and picking my frontlines and places to place my reinforcements. As opposed to stack wars between 2 tiles.

Well, I don't know how you manage it, guys,  but I am extremely picky for games, I have no fun playing if not 110% my taste. I love Age of Kings and 1 per tile unit does not annoy me at all. But in Age of Kings, you can select multiple stacks then give global "move to" command, they will find their fastest way to travel. You can even assign those stacks to group keys and find them fast and friendly.

What happens in civ5? Is a disaster: you can't select them in group! Have to click one by one. If something goes into the path at some moment, the unit will stop and ask for a new command. There is no way to know where you set it to go previously (for example like in h3) so you are lost. The camera is shaking as drunk, while for such actions, camera should go without transition, for the sake of your health. Once you finally reach your destination, both fingers and keyboard broken, curse words repertory emptied, the town is as big as one of your units. So to attack it, you have to be adjacent, and to move around you need 8-9 turns. To defeat a 1 pop town you need now 20 turns of traffic jam around. To defeat a 20 pop town you need exactly same moves, not less, not more.

You have fun doing this? Not me. There is not a single successful game out which uses this crippled mechanic.

I can understand that vs human player, it would be probably more interesting, but AI plays so bad that you don't need such moves and pattern. You can level up an archer till 300 xp points just by placing him near a spot AI wants to work. He will keep sending a worker every turn, you kill, he sends again without even defending him. When you have bombers it is even more ridiculous, in 10 turns you have double attack,  in 20 your bomber is max exp, because AI does never use air defense outside towns.

So for me stacking is capital, otherwise head ache. Play as you like

Why play at all if the game is so braindead? Why not play an interessting game, say, Age of Wonders III? Beats everything I've played so far.

Because Firaxis's civilizations is Beethoven of gaming for me. Every version I enjoyed immensely, not going to give so fast on 5, unless I find that no mods possible can improve it.

Age of Wonders 2 also is a monument. But I didn't hurry for the third, as I see they moved to 3d and I so much dislike this thing in modern games.

Double standard for Beethoven?
My wife has been playing Civ 4 with the Rise of Mankind mod for a couple of years, and she can't play Civ 5. Finds it boring.
3d? Well. I would advise to warch one of their vids or one of the ton of let's play vids on youtube.

I don't have a wife to match your point there, but my father plays Heroes 3 for over 10 years and says that Heroes 4 is the biggest crap he ever saw. Point is, we each have different tastes, someone might like a game, some might not. If you like the tactical play of backgammon, suit yourself! I prefer chess.
