At the moment it's more likely that our great leaders in Romania are going to make us freeze to death in the winter, or a more unlikely possibility is that they'll send me and countless other men to fight.

I don't see the problem. You can go to Russia via Turkey.
And why would your leaders make you freeze to death? Romania looks pretty good, energy-wise. Are they urging you to save energy? I mean, what's wrong with a sweatshirt?

Thank you for the tip. If I finally decide to go to Russia you'll be the first I say good riddance to.
Nothing wrong with sweatshirts. Nothing wrong with paying really high power bills and with rising prices for food and other necessary things for life, when the average Romanian earns something like a maximum of 500 euro per month, after taxes. No problemo. After all, we have to stop bogeyman Russia from taking over the world.

Except that's not true. Ukraine is trying to stop Russia while we sit on the sideline financing and supplying them. Since resource delivery from Russia has come to an end therefore, Russia now sells their stuff to the OPEC countries - pricier - and the OPEC countries sell us the Russian stuff - a lot pricier. So THEY are the guys who fill their pockets, profiteering from the West's standing for something.

Yes, thanks for clarifying. The main point is that the current situation sucks for the EU countries and of course for Ukraine too.
I wish my country would be led by someone who actually put his own people's interests first. Like what Hungary and Serbia are doing.

See, that sums the problem up quite well:
1) What are "the people's interest (of a specific country)"?
2) How would YOU know what that is (and determine whether the leaders are serving them or not)?
3) Are we talking about short or long term interest - how far should we look ahead when determining people's interest?
And so on.
Now, what ARE Hungary and Serbia actually doing so differently? And how is their situation comparable with Romania's?

JJ, *I* may not KNOW for certain what are the people's best interests, short term or long term, but I can have an opinion on what I think would be best for the people, especially if we're talking about my own country.
And my opinion is that every person wants to have the living standards improved and not worsened. A leader should look to make the country a better place to live in every aspect. And our current president and his cohorts have done anything but that. Really, it's the opposition party that's been trying to improve our living standards by raising the minimum wage or helping the elderly. But that's another story and not for this thread.
By participating in these "sanctions" against Russia it seems to me that it's the common people in European countries like mine that take the blow, as I said earlier.
Now, Hungary and Serbia agreed recently to build a pipeline to bring in Russian oil for instance.
Hungary is in the EU, but Viktor Orban has been firm in his position that continuing sanctions against Russia and letting the war escalate is not the way to go. And Serbia is not in the EU but from what I understand they are not as hostile to Russia now as is Romania and other EU states.
Romania's leaders just cheer on what the western countries say and do on the Ukraine problem, and they put down everything coming from Russia. Four legs good, two legs bad.

I think it's pretty obvious that cutting electricity and heater for the population is not a result of caring about their best interest.
If that happens, it's pretty hardcore, I don't think people realize it.
And USA has been pissing off Russia since way before 2014, remember Putin's 2007 speech.
The hypocrisy is horrendous, yes Russia is violating international law by attacking Ukraine but no one said anything or took sanctions when USA/NATO has been doing it multiple times in other parts of the world.
That said, things are getting from bad to worse, Putin clearly underestimated Ukraine army and NATO, so things might keep turning out uglier. I'm not very reassured to know Russian army is facing, between others, French canons and German tanks.
Btw, I know a few people stuck in Russia right now, they are hiding and trying to buy a paper that allows them to get out the country, which is understandable as they don't want to be sent to death in Ukraine.

On what Russia did, I don't think it's normal or acceptable behaviour or anything of the sort. And that said I admit I am not well familiar with 2014 events or what happened since then in the regions that Russia wants to annex.
But looking at the situation right now I want peace to come in Ukraine, and not a continuous conflict in Ukraine, or even more, a large scale war with Ukraine supported by EU/NATO on one side and Russia on the other. Absolutely not.
And for my country I hope for something better in the 2024 elections. But who knows what may happen until then. Nothing good I'm afraid.

Putin is a pragmatic, he could not imagine we will sit like ducks while our "leaders" barter their people interest and well being for getting attention in their EU bureaucratic bubbles, then invoking ethical and moral principles they never applied elsewhere, despite more than evidence.
That being said, Putin sent only a tiny fraction of Russian potential army in Ukraine, they have been fighting since mars at 1:6 ratio, so the question is now him being able to draft more or not. He also was very moderate in his war strategy, he avoided civilians as much as possible, he avoided the destruction of power stations, the destruction of infrastructures and such, while he COULD do it and by that force Zelensky to reconsider negotiations instead of making dramatic faces in front of a submissive EU parliament. Most of the idiots on medias calling Russian entire annihilation as a whole do not understand different peoples are not made from same alloy. Putin, who is still majorly popular - more than ever if polls are considered, will not just present his excuses if Ukraine/USA knocks at Moscow doors. He will unleash apocalypse, he always had one word.
