most regular players play random maps because:

1) there is not many well balanced fixed maps (maybe 5-7 really good maps)

2) regular player can play 100-150 games per year. That means that if he would play fixed maps then he would have to play each map 30-50 times. For most regular players it's boring to play the same map 50 times. ...

1) I'm suprised.  It may have been almost 10 years but back then there was at least 30 fixed maps for which I felt there was at least 2 equally advantageous starting position.

2) HOMM3 is such a great game that even on a as strait forward and simplistic map as Crimson & Clover It always offered something different and I never got bored playing it.  50 times per year ?  That was per week ! :Þ  It was a lot of fun, both fixed and random maps.  The only time I could have gotten bored was when I played necro war on a random XLarge against Tim554... hording squeletons with 3 or 4 heroes...  10 + minutes playing turns !

SAG  Is there a players list still playing H3 ?  I might be tempted.  Also I recently managed to like H5 although I can't see nearly as much balance in that game as there is in H3. Do you play H5 ?  Do you know if H6 will be any good ?  I know it's off topic but since I initiated it I have some priviledges !

I have played many "fixed" maps so I think I can tell you something good multiplayer-"fixed"-maps These maps are not boring!

Battle of glory

Very big and rich map. You cannot choose towns, but I think it is already well-balanced
This map is very rich: a lot of artifacts, resources, mines, primary-skill-buildings, abandoned towns etc... And you will get thousands of troops before a main battle! But this is 8-players map, so there will be much more main battles!

Warlords!

A very well-balanced and epic map. Map is not very rich, but still you can enjoy with other 7 players

Realm Of Chaos

I remember that I played this map so many times.. Just give a hill fort for dungeon and so all will be balanced.

Meeting in Muzgob

A huge and rich map with no underground. Just disable a purple-comp and all is right! Maybe a teal-comp can be bad, but in my opinion you should win it easily.

War of the Mighty

A rich map. Disable teal-comp and underground and put garrisons between regions. This is for 4-players and you gonna enjoy with the big battles!

Viking we shall Go!!

Well, this is not very balanced but you will enjoy this map as well because the map looks like Europe

Statistics http://www.heroes-iii.com/stat_all1.php shows only few fixed maps: Giant War, Hourglass 3, Desert War, North Vrs South.

60-80 rooms are open at Gameranger at 3pm-7pm GMT.
Some recent game results are shown at http://www.heroes-iii.com/all.php
Many skilled players prefer homm3 WT version (www.heroeswt.net) which is more balanced and has better interface.

I downloaded Heroes III complete and I don't seem to have a map called Battle of Glory.  Do you know where I can download missing fixed maps?

Well when my HoMM3 was installed it was already in there
Anyway when I searched this map from google I found this: http://beglink.com/files/bf891a

The file's size is same as my map so I think it should be that
The map should look like this:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Very nice map in my opinion... I played with strongholg (purple) and got 394 points (#3)

That's interesting because it seems like a user created map, and not a 3D0 map.  Anyways, thanks for the link.  It seems like a solid map.

Is it really true that 3d0 made these maps which were already in game ? I really wonder... just because there are a lot of different styles of map etc... and I would not have ever believed that 3d0 had made so much good maps

On the fixed maps...

Back in the days when we've played Heroes A LOT, there was dozen of perfect maps at least, and another dozen or two of solid maps. And by this I mean just the multiplayer ones - in single player, nearly every map was good, just because you've played the best game ever...

I played it and I really don't think it's that balanced. It's hard to find gold (so FEW chests), but the amount of resources you can flag is ridiculous. You get 3 ore mines/lumber mills, and 2 of the other four resource sources for each corner of the map, which means that you get a HUGE advantage if your town is located beside a marketplace.

IMO I think Crimson and Clover is THE most balanced map.

I have read 15 pages until now. There were really good tactics and advices. However, I wonder that why not anyone talk about diplomacy skill. I think it is really effective (not saying crucial or indispensable) especially in L or XL random maps with strong creatures selection. As recently as yesterday in L random map(200% difficulty) against 6 enemies I won the game with diplomacy skill, because I had to kill 6 allies and my army (population comes from castles) was not enough for all of them.

Maybe because diplomacy has nothing to do with tactics or skill at all?
Is there anyone who could LOSE a single game with diplomacy?

Anyway all the things mentioned here are about tactics and my message was nothing about it. I just wrote a message, no need to talk in an insulting way.
By the way, you might not lose but can win with it. In a single battle it may not be a tactic however when you look game as a whole it is really good tactic taking diplomacy instead of for example ballistics. It let you gather huge army for free. (especially with leadership or the necklace gives +3 luck and +3 morale, I could not remember name right now.)

He didn't insult you, it's just that this thread was started 10 years ago by top players and bringing NOW diplomacy in is proving that you started this game a few weeks/months ago. So don't feel offended when someone points that out.

that is your tought, I am not recruit, I just wonder why nobody mentioned it, thats it. I did not say it is excellent skill or something, just say it can be a good tactics sometimes.
By the way, I suggest you do not talk someones skills you don not know, trust me I can beat most of the players in here. I think playing with stupid AI at lower difficulties and making some tactics on it is not what excellent players do.

Diplomacy is imbalanced (will win you every game) so its not even considered. If you analyze diplomacy in your strategy it means u haven't played many online games.

yes, this is fact, jeddite, that experienced players never play with Diplo...this is simply boring to play both sides with Diplo or oneway game if only one has it. there are 5-10 other things that are normally not allowed in multiplayer games (look at DEFAULT Rules at www.heroes-iii.com) but nothing is so disbalanced as Diplo.

Diplomacy is the first banned skill in a MP game and that sums up everything about it. Nothing to discuss really.
