2006 FIFA World Cup Germany

its a coming soon

so lets get a discussion going about winners, losers, big disapointments, injuries and so on

i did think that england were going to win the world cup but with owen and rooney out i think that this is doubtful. they have no real threatening strikers but thier midfield could take them far if played right.

Germany, well i think they can ride the wave of home ground so some extent. with ballack and kevin kuranyi attacking i think they can go far but will stumble at the QF or Semis

I want brazil to not win it. i wanna see ronaldinho put on a show but i think brazil are over rated.

france, i think they will get to the final. henry, vieira, zidane and trezeguet are scary. possible winner

Group A
Chances are very high, Germany wonīt qualify for next round, if they donīt find back to the style they played in the confedcup last summer, where they did some really decent games. The defense is horrible.....Poland will do a good job i guess...Ecuador beat Argentina and Brazil in their qualifying games! Costa Rica could be a surprise.

Group B
England strong, Sweden good defense, but i hope none of them will underestimate Paraguay! Trinidad&Tobago will get kicked badly...

Group C
Iīm pretty sure either Netherlands or Argentina will go home after first round, coz Ivory Coast will kick one of them. Serbia was awesome in qualifying, they only had 1 goal scored against them, in 10 matches!

Group D
Should be an easy go for Mexico and Portugal, Iran and Angola wonīt be a match.

Group E
Very balanced in my eyes. Italy will have to do their very best to get into next round, but history shows, they doing hard in first round....and thatīs the chance for USA, Czech and Ghana.

Group F
I donīt think Brazil or Croatia will have any problems to qualify. Australia and Japan are just not strong enough to compete.

Group G
France is getting old, Switzerland did very good in qualifying, and Southkorea reached semifinals in 2002, so this could be interesting. Watch out France!

Group H
Spain and Ucraine are too strong for Tunesia and Saudi-Arabia.

So my vote goes to an "underdog".
Either Ivory Coast or Spain will do it this time.

Very bold selection u have there Dirk!
I agree with you though, some new teams really impressed in the qualifiers.Ivory Coast was indeed one of them.
Spain on the other hand, has been one of the favorites that has always dissapointed in the final tourneys since as far as i can remember.I partriculary remember how they were kicked out in USA 94 from the early groop stage.
Looking at the players they have at hand , i wouldn't call them an underdog though

interesting thoughts, especially ivory coast and spain being winners, ivory coast will get somewhere IMO but spain, yes they have been extremely disapointing. and much of thier squad are young and inexperienced.

Group A
ecuador will win and germany will just edge out costa rica for 2nd. poland, i dont see them being threats

Group B
with englands injuries, they may have trouble scoring goals. sweden are a decent team and so are paraguay. hard to call but i am going to say that somehow england top the group followed by trin and tob or paraguay.

Group C
Argentina will top group followed by ivory coast. dont know anything about serbia and holland i cant see them getting past argentina and ivory coast

Group D
Portugal will win. dont know anything about mex or iran. i will go for iran

Group E
very tight group. italy are becoming an attacking team now and i think that they will concede many goals cause of this. czechs are a good team. czechs to win followed by italy. should be a very close group, 1st and 4th seperated by only a few points

Group F
Brazil to beat everyone. croatia to beat japan and Aus. Aus to beat japan. Japan to be total disapointments. australia may beat croatia and get through but that would be a very long shot

Group G
france to dominate and win all games. dont know much about rest of teams. south korea had guus hiddink and i think he was reason behind success in 2002 WC. without him they might get through. i dont know much about swiss or togo

Group H
Spain to win, followed by Ukraine. saudi arabia lost 8-0 to germany last time round, wonder how they will do this time

provided that there arent major injuries, i think france will beat argentina in the semis. england will beat brazil in other semi. if rooney plays in final (at a good fitness level, not him just crawling around on the pitch) england will win. otherwise france

My favorite

Italy is clear my favorite for this tourney!

Italy is making an overall very good impression. A team that is really a team, the people in this team know each other well without being overall too old... a very experienced team.

Let look at the parts of this Team:

Decent keeper Buffon (maybe the best of the world atm), decent experienced defence, very good balanced midfield without any weaknesses and hell of good strikers.

Luckily enough the new trainer changed the "catenagio-style" from the old trainer, into a "controlled-offensive-style". So one of the weaknesses of the italian team was to strike back when they received a goal. Now they have the ability to controll the game and not just to exagerate defense and hope for a goal.

They have the hardest group in the beginning. Means if they manage to compete in there well, they will be hard to stop for the rest of the tourney. Additional to this ...as Germany will fail in this tourney soon (maybe).. the German fans will support Italy, like Italy did with the German team in 1990 (the peeps didnt forget that).
____

The chances of my team (Germany) are still undecided. The lack of quality might be balanced with some advantage...first to play on homeground...second to have a comparable easy group and having the big teams on the other side of the table, so half-final would be the first time to meet one of them. Germany is traditionally a tourney team, so knowing that they might get into the tourney, due to the above mentioned, let us hope here. Maybe Podolski and Schweinsteiger will surprise us. Lets just pray that the defense isnt as weak as it is now.

____

I dont see France, Spain or England anywhere near a favorite. The France team seems to be vanished, like the "thought-to-be-unbeatable" German Team after 1990. Spain is always a suck up at tourneys and England does think the players are better then they are.

_____

Netherlands and Brasil? Those are definately to mention here. Netherland games will be "as" homeground as they are near and they always bring tons of suppoerters with them. Uve seen that in 1974 (final in Germany).

No need to explain why Brazil is always a favorite...but in Europe they werent as succesful as on other Continents. Still most (if not all) players now play in Europe, so they know the mentality and the stadions very well.

Well this is how i see the things at the moment:

Favorites: Italy, Netherlands, Brasil

I think Germany or Brazil will win the finals. Germany, because it is their home, or Brazil, because the are da bomb.

Where are those times when Poland was a top team...

thats a good obervation you made there

i agree though, japan doesnt have any chance in my eyes. they may beat australia but are sure losses against croatia and brazil. australia needs to beat japan though so we can celebrate something. a goal against brazil or croatia will do some good aswell

xarfax, i must say that italy have a very good team, but italian clubs are extremely unpredictable. managers get fired all the time and top clubs lose to bottom clubs all the time. but if italy does bring consistancy to the WC they are a good chance

germany, hopefully Phillip Lahm (my fav german player) can get them far , podolski, i am interested in seeing him play, ive heard he is good

france, i think zidane, vieira and most importantly henry can carry them very very far

Brazil is surely the favourite, but whenever the World Cup has been held in Europe a european team has always won (except in 1958 where Brazil won a  5 - 2 vitory against Sweden). History suggest that a european team will win this time. But which one?
France - over the hill, they're to old or the good players have retired.
Germany - they don't have a very good team but often perform well in tournaments.
Italy - ? perhaps
Spain - no, they always disappoint...
England - not without Rooney or Owen, Lampard can't score enough goals alone.

Anyway it's always quite difficult to predict which nation is going to win. Last time most people (including myself) thought that Argentina would win...

Hello.

I'm in the U.S. and I'm not a fan, but I was wondering what opinions fans had (if any) about the possible banning of Iran's president from the World Cup.

I can understand why it would be good to ban him, since he has said thing like the Holocaust was a propoganda myth, and Israel should be wiped off the map.

I can also understand why it would be good to let him attend, since this would show him how "civilized" countries can be above the politics of hate, especially in the context of international sportsmanship.

Just curious.

Politics and Sports are 2 different issues. You shouldnīt mix them up, and thatīs why it was never a question if he is allowed to visit the games or not...

Holocaust denial is illegal according to german law, right? Can some of the german members verify this.
I agree that football and politics shouldn't be messed up, but it's not that simple. Tthere are a lot of feelings involved that various political situations throughout history has created. The "us" and "them" aspect really adds a lot of atmosphere to classical meetings.

Nope they didn't. Australia beat them! And i won cash for that!

This year I'm hoping Spain or Holland wins simply because neither of them haven't won before. I don't mind if England wins also, but judging from the way they played against Paraguay they won't

Damn Ivory Coast!!!
why on earth did they played so well?? fortunately we won, but it was harder than I thought it would be...so when finally the score ended Argentina 2-Ivory Coast 1 I was quite in shock.
anyway, now itīs time for serbia and montenegro, and i think it might be an easier game. on the other hand, i really respect Drogba and co. because they probabily deserved to win(or to tie) and I hope theyīll pass to the next round...

my two teams are definitly italy and australia.. im confident italy will do very well.. they are just so strong.. i hope australia hav a good run.. they hav a good team, one i reckon should qualify.. croatia r nothing special in my opinion.. brazil played shocking and stil won, i think if they play that way against australia we shuld at least get a draw.. altho australias weaker defence will be exposed, they just allow too much space to the opposition forwards and give away too many chances. Japan and Croatia shuld be a close game i think, i dont see either as very strong and australia shuld hav won by alot more.. to score 3 goals in 8 minutes isnt too bad tho..

i look forward to the next round of matches, i think that basically all the teams that won in the first round will most likely go through bar a few, such as sweden, who shuld qualify, and a couple other teams..

You underestimate Croatia. They played quite well against Brazil. You're not half as good as they are. I'm sure Croatia will qualify for the 2nd round.
