I think the worst is that BD are affected by magic. I once cast Amargedeon (spelling?) and hurt my own BD. I was a warlock but this mean we can never cast that spell. Quite stupid...

So you say it has to do with the user that mine defenders are outnumbering the starting army by 3:1 ? How am I supposed to beat thta kind of army. Ok I might finish the first mine defenders off, but then how am I supposed to beat the other defenders?

I've played H3 and H4 pretty much and I think that H5 is BS just because it's a game where the rules make u have to wait more than you play.

Agree!
That damn Town Point system, and out-#ed mine guards, to play Heroic difficulty level is a pain, and you have to WAIT more than you PLAY!

There's really no issue with mine defenders. If you could easily beat them in the previous games, you could do so just as well in this one.

my complain about HOMM5 is maps like other ones... game need much multiplayer maps indeed... i voted number of towns and hero classes cos i hoped at least 8 towns but only 6... dont wanna tell same things as where are the barbarians etc.. but thats really true.. and as mentioned before only one hero class is not sufficient for me... game is good overall but could exactly be better... so, now waitin HOMM6 with these features'.D'

The coming back of upgrades and the killing of stealth skill is bad though the game has many good points. Ultimate skills arent balanced. For example wizards have a really crappy 1. I mean who needs all spells after reaching level 30++. Compared to the necromancers ultimate its very very cheap.

The graphics run on a mere GeForce 3, so people shouldn't be complaining...

;-)

As for the look and feel of them, it's all subjective anyway, so discussing it just leads to more discussion, ad infinitum...

The most annoying thing about Heroes 5 is that it is ridiculously bloated and slow... on my 2 GHz AMD Athon XP with 512 MB RAM and a GeForce 4 FX5200 it's always using virtual memory, and takes around 5 seconds to tab between heroes. From what I could tell, while the game is running, it uses another 512 MB of virtual memory - Windows always complained during the game that it was "increasing the size of the virtual memory file", until I manually set it up to use at least 1 GB.

I haven't played it yet but a few things I know im not going to like is the absense of some of the main creatures (Come on..Dwarves and the Entire Barbarian town has been around since H1)

Plus I don't like them completely changing the story, they should have kept it with the original 4.

I really like the game.  My gripes are minor in the overall scheme of things, although I have only played maybe 20 hours, and some of it super slowly in Hotseat with my daughter.

1.  Hiring from 2 available heroes WORLD WIDE.  Nothing more annoying then conqueroring a new town and not being able to hire an aligned hero.  Usually waiting till next week will do it but sometimes not.

2.  Combat is still so trivial that I just quick combat and play it as an adventure game.  Anyone that claims there is deep strategy to combat in this game hasn't played many strategy games.

3.  Djinns look retarded.  No offense meant to actual retards who may be reading this.  I dunno where that concept for a Djinn could have come from except perhaps hallucinegenic (sp?) drugs.  MINOR I KNOW but irritating.

4.  Lack of a manual.  After 2 full plays of the Warlords map i really DO NOT know the skill trees.  Is it available somewhere in game?

NOTE:  on the flip side, perhaps not knowing this information is a benefit since it makes you learn.

5.  AI on adventure map.  I can take a single hero with single monster on a tour thru hostile lands and flag Multi resources.  When I am finally forced to flee or am actually killed, the resources stay mine for a long time.  Resource grabs are critical but AI doesn't know that.  They walk right past stuff that would take minimal move points to take at no cost.

6.  I can see events where I SHOULD NOT SEE THEM.  I think this is the "Fog of War" issue people have discussed.

7.  The pierced ears on the elephant.  How utterly lame.    And actually i like the mounted elephants otherwise.

8.  Weekly creature outputs.  This may turn into a benefit for me since you can play return trips or monster shuttles to happen on DAY 1.  But I liked that in Heroes 4 I could get daily additional creatures.

9.  Lack of maps.  I can see myself becoming bored with this but since I still play on Normal skill i have a lot of time to play the available maps before they become boring.

10.  The little gold sack for recruiting is next to the gold in hand for marketplace transactions.  I DUNNO how many times i miss clicked that then have to click 4 times to get back where i was.  Small complaint and i will get over it.

11.  Mega Skeleton Overkill in Necro.  It's clear that having a good ranged attack early is a huge bonus, but with the auto skeleton raising those level 1 creatures become AWESOME in a 1K stack at endgame.

12.  the totally overwhelming imballance on initiative.  A humorous way to look at this was when examining the Thieves guild.  I saw the "Best Unit" was my stack of 50 ancient treants.  Heh.  The reason they have such an overwhelming number is they are too damn slow to get involved in any combats if you have any Silver Unicorns.

13.  Everyone gets too many spells.  I guess this is Heroes of Magic and Magic 5.

14.  I miss stealth from HOMM4.  But that is just me i guess.

15.  Can't play in a window.  HOMM4 was always a good backup item to do while folding hands while playing poker on line.

I still love the game tho and see many many hours of good play to come.

errr... If you can't get a better outcome by fighting your own "big" combats than what Quick Combat gives, then YOU are the one who needs to learn about strategy =)

That being said, they put in the Quick Combat for a reason: to let people play the game as an Adventure game, i guess. Still, you're missing a great part of the game, because you will not be able to compete with the CPU in Heroic or even in Hard, if you use nothing but Quick Combat, ever.

I can do better than Q combat.  I simply find the time spent to be very dull after the first few times.  There is VERY little strategic about it except the obvious.  but i made a thread about that and I won't ruin this thread with it.

and wow i must rock since you only crapped on one point.

nah, i simply didn't want to answer to powerful argumentation like "Djinns look retarded. No offense meant to actual retards" or "The pierced ears on the elephant. How utterly lame.".
So i simply trashed the comment that screamed "i cannot play this game correctly so i criticize it" =)
Combat has always been a part of HoMM. If you don't like combat, that's fine, but there's little reason to play HoMM. I mean, it'd be like playing Football Manager and say "i don't like all those tedious management tasks!".

agree here. I play every combat, just to enjoy the beautiful graphics and spell animations ;P Besides, playing them myself results in very little (or none at all) loses. Q combat is always risky.

My only significant crticisms are:

1 - Not enough factions. Six is a fair amount, don't get me wrong. But I was spoiled after HOMM III

2 - Transparency issues. On both the map and the combat screen, you cannot select certainl objects unless you do a camera swing and/or zoom (especially underground).

Very, very irritating.

almost all my problems with HoMM5 can be summed up in one sentence "HoMM3 in 3D and a twist"

I think this is exactly what they were going for, though. I loved HOMM IV but a lot of HOMM fans didn't - heroes were super powerful (and could be staked), creatures could roam heroe-less and transport artefacts, etc.

I like the return to weekly creature generation - that was a major point of strategy in HOMM that was lost in HOMM IV.

When reviewers came to IV's defense, they pretty much said that it was simply a different game than III and to accept it for what it was. I couldn't agree more, and that's how I see V.

Quick combat is convenient for me because when it is the week of *insert creature here*, and I come across them on the map, I don't have to waste time fighting meaningless battles.

open this file with notepad,
find "setvar gfx_fullscreen = 1",
change it to "setvar gfx_fullscreen = 0",
then you can play in window mode
(you may have to change the resolution in game to see the effect).
