I don't think that Meteors is a fire-based spell. Then again, I could be wrong.

Nope, earth. Only fire spells are fireball, firewall and armageddon.

I thought so. So what sith_of_ziost meant to say was that Flamestrike impacts Firebal, Firewall and Armageddon.

The good thing is that Dwarves actually like to specialize in fire spells. It's easy enough for them to get Ignite, and then you can bombard opponents with powerful fire spells upon fire spells. The Mark of Fires you will perform will greatly increase damage.

If Firewave was triggered 100% of the time, then the Flamelords could compare, but since it's not, the Thunder Thanes just end up being better. I mean, with Rune of Berserking, a properly poisiotned Thunder Thane could do high damage to several units. And this comes in more usefulness sinc most enemies like to box in their archers.

Depends if the runes have one action duration. For instance you can use rune of thunderclap in first turn and combine it with rune of battlerage in the second assuming you did not attack in the meantime. I think both berserking rune and thunderclap remain until you attack.

If you use refresh rune, you can reuse the last rune used by that creature. So if you just used a Rune of Berserking, you use Refresh Rune, and you can maybe use it again. Effect is not guaranteed.

well it refreshes a random rune previously used.

So if you keep using only this rune it will surely refresh it.

It doesn't really matter because there aren't many Runes you will be using anyway. Let's be honest that the more common ones are those of Berserking, occasionally Charge, Exorcism, Resurrection, occasionally Dragonform, and the one that lets you Hydra attack.

Break faster and kick their dwarven behinds as if nothing happened? This has happened with me because necro is a faster faction and I also did not get cleansing OR rune of exorcism which would not have helped against puppet anyway. My thanes used my own runes and gave me trouble and I kept getting weakened. Also consider a summoned phoenix while at that. No, fortress will be trouble only after some time and necro will have its chance. In that game I even had build thanes and dragons week 2 so it's not as if I did not have units. That was back in HoF where motn was much better but necro can still break faster than fortress and the core gameplay in creeping has not changed remarkably.

Granted, Necro can attack the map faster.  I will point out though that this happened during HoF and maybe core gameplay hasn't changed, but I'm willing to wager that those who play the dwarfs have gotten a lot better in their strategies.

For example, when given the choice I no longer pick Karli or Ingvar.  No, if given the choice I will go with Inga.  Rune of charge is so crucial in the beginning; Rune of Exorcism so necessary against Necro.

Dwarven Luck is such the perfect counter to dark.  As for missing out on Cleansing, there's always Magic Immunity that can help clear things up.  You might not get all of them but it is easy to get enough of these abilities that Dark Magic is rendered null and void.

As for a Phoenix, yes Necro Phoenix is going to be monstrous.  But the dwarves better than anyone can take that kind of pounding while they're ripping the Necro troops to shreds.  Word of Light is so good now, it might be too good.  I had a mediocre spell power and was dishing out 552 points to each stack against my buddy.  Curse of the Netherworld, you might say?  Dwarven Luck my reply!

!?  I strongly disagree. Runes of Etherealness and Thunderclap are also used commonly.  I don't use Berserking that much because of...Paw Strike!  And then I add a Rune of Thunderclap and I...Paw Strike!  And then I teleport my bears away and I...Paw Strike!

Personally I think Rune of Battle Rage is too strong and should be nerfed to have the first stack attacked be able to retaliate, assuming they have one.  Don't get me wrong.  I'll still use it, but I won't pretend it's fair.

Sure but you won't be able to build mage guild 5 soon considering a runic shrine and the dwellings. Dwarven luck is probably your best shot, especially coupled with a resistance artifact. I'm not saying it will be one sided but before week 4 it will be a very tough fight should they have phoenix and cotn/puppet.

So, I've got a couple of questions..

This factions needs a lot of wood and ore. So you need those mines quick, or otherwise you'll stuck in like 4 turns. What's the best way to get those mines? just quick build a big army and get them, and if so, what's the best way to do that?

And second: What's the best hero of this faction, and why? And, what's the best hero if i want a good beginning army, not spells, just a fine army.

Sup guys,
I've been testing Fortress lately and trying to understand how best to creep with this faction.

While heroes like Jarli and Ingwar allow faster initial creeping, they seem to fail miserably to keep the speed of creeping from week three on, as shieldguards and skirmishers simply dont pack enough punch to put down the big monsters.

How the hell do I creep in mid and late game while minimizing my losses with this damn faction?

Angry W.

I know, it's really Fortress creeping is slow... very slow.

I've had the best experiences with EBBA though. 7-10 Bears at Day one make a real difference. Bear Riders are THE backbone of my own Fortress creeping, so that's why I mention them. Karli is quite nice too; he starts with Ammocart, Luck and Soldier's Luck. Only a pity that Spearwielder lack the punch to be efficient creepers. They just DIE too soon. Others are average, with the exception of Inga, who is really SUCKS at Creeping. (even Svea, who starts with Stunning Lightning Bolt, is handier)

Do you have hammers of fate expansion? (I'm not sure if fortress is playable with only ToTE)

Else, did this happen on several maps? Otherwise it could just be that the team was not available on the map you chose.

(This should actually go in some technical help thread)

You need either hof or tote, if you start a multiplayer map it should have all factions available. One thing though, don't start with fortress. It's not a newbie friendly faction.

Depends if you get early the Rune of Charge. At the moment that you have the Bear Riders & Rune of Charge, it gets quite fast

Get more levels quickly, Ingvar is unbalanced and he boost the little guys to pure awesomeness with a few levels under his belt.

Try and get Ice Bolt, even without Destructive that is a useful spell to creep with.

I guess it can be hard to creep with Inga but it shouldn't be with Ingvar. Unless of course you're creeping very hard stacks like Arcane Archers, Firehounds and the like.

Even arcanes can hardly damage those guys, all you need is some mana and eldritch arrow, hopefully icebolt.

Well, it looks like the Fortress only has a major weakness in creeping, but they are very tough to beat in a supposedly even numbers (meaning similar #s of same level creatures, similar hero levels, items, stats).

Their high defense, light magic and runes are a hard game to beat.

What are the big weaknesses of the "dwarfs," many of whom are quite larger than humans, elves and even most orcs, in large, "even" fights?
