You can with people NEAR you I think, but if they live far away, you need the Friend Code now. You have to reach a certain point in the game (not far in) to do that though.

ahh okay fair enough
Btw how does the whole national pokedex work? - Do you have to gain it EVERY play through?
And is it all Hoenn and Sinnoh pokemon that first become available afterwards?

Well thanks to Kareeah I have an Umbreon, and I caught a Ditto below Goldenrod (on Soul Silver)..so I can have my army of Eevee if I want and can find the stones . Havn't settled my squad yet, but looks like Umbreon, Ghastly, Machop, Totadile, Hoothoot (may change to Spearow though) and Onix. After I manage to evolve Togi that is.
May switch out Ghastly for a fire type when I find one, and Machop for a Electric type but not sure.
So type wise (not specific pokemon) what is your preferred 6 pokemon?

Flying/Ice (since they are so rare I often go water/ice)
Ghost (or Psychic)
Electric
Fire
Dragon
Fighting (or Grass)

Water(for surf)
Random
But Flying is one of the most fun to choose, since there are so many nice ones. Was thinking about Scarmory since Steel is imba and Scarmory gets some nice moves
Fire has some cool combos aswell
Electric, one of my favourit types Really
Fighting, since R&S I haven't played without a fighting type, they can actully solve many tough situations
Water, either starting pokemon or one of twothousands others
Random: Just for fun really, get a bug for change or something I normally dont go for

Might want to think about changing the random to Ice. Dragon Pokemon are some of the toughest out there, but Ice can keep them in check.

Skarmory is nice but I found it to be just kinda...average. It's like Fearow, good till it gets over 30. Then it just kinda sucks.
Buggies are cool and the way they can cut down psychic and grass pokemon is insane. Scyther is my favourite but pinsir and megahorn are absolutely great too. Beedrill is great for level 30 or so and if it got better moves it would be okay for much longer.

Water sucks.
It really does.
But still, can't help but to love blastoise, dewgong, cloister, lapras, seaking, Kingdra and probably some I don't remember.

I disagree, a good Suicine (spelling) the legandary water pokemon can be a very strong pokemon. Rumors abound that you can catch MewTwo in HG/SS though..I would LOVE to get my hands on a MewTwo

Suicune is only good for mirror coat. Though it is VERY good for mirror coat. My bro humiliated my Mewtwo with it's mirror coat. Survived Psychic with 100 HP left and mirror coated somewhere around 600 damage or so. Good bye!
Then I beat his whole 100level team with a 70 level ghastly so I think that even it up.
Also, blastoise with eathquake can do wonders.

Seriously now? 
I heard people whining about Water as one of the most viable mono-Type strategies in all of Pokémon. Also, I feel I should add that it's not 6 mono-Water Pokémon, it'd probably be something like:
Quagsire (Water/Ground)
Dewgong (Water/Ice) Definitely agree with you here. Love that darned seal.
Gyarados (Water/Flying) Although we both know what happens when you mix this fella with electricity... 
Lanturn (Water/Electric)
Lapras (Water/Ice)
Then for slot 6, I either throw off my opponent with a non-water type, or stick something else in there. What can I say? I love Water types.
I also enjoy Grass, Psychic, Ground (but not Rock, bleh) and Ice types.

Newer liked quagsire. Too slow.
Oh yeah, Gyarados is a killer. Hyper beam leaves nothing standing. It's special is lousy but the attack stats are among the top.
Lanturn is a so-so, works but I don't really like it nor is it really good.
Lapras is a god. More HP than you can count and nice special not to mention it can sing! Yeah totally one of the best pokemons around. Just a shame for it's slow speed.
I like ghost, bug, poison, ice, electric and dragon. Of course a lot are pokemon dependant. Dragonair is my all time fav. Haunter being a close second with scyther, lapras, raichu, seadra, rapidash and arbok somewhere beyond. And some I forget of course.
That said I don't like single type teams. I usually get an inspiration about what pokemons I want in my team. Had a lot. Usually not so much of a power team or useful team. I tend to run into problems when I can't find place for all the needed HMs in my team or I find I lack a flying pokemon. The lack of flying happens quite often actually.
Most often in team:
-Rapidash
-Arbok
-Articuno
-Gengar
-Dragonair
-Electrode
My first team:
-Blastoise
-Dodrio
-Electrode
-Vileplume
-Chansey

There really are no superior types in the game. Every one of them has a weakness..all you have to do is know how to exploit it. Sure some of the legendary have superior stats, but a Zapados (for instance) will still have a hard time against a good (or great) ground/rock type (especially if equal level).
