I wonder about that. It's one of this circling rumors than can prove to be true all false...

For instance, are they counting Mega Evolutions as new Pokemon?

No, Megavolutions do not count towards the 69 count. And the number is based on the ammount of new mons found by leakers and others with early acces.

Sluggoo is said to evolve into Goodra at level *70* (step aside, hydreigon), so it's this game's token pseudo-legendary. Evenso, i suspect Slugoo is on par with most other fully evolved, non-legendary pokémon in generation six, to balance it out.

ETA: oddly enough no megaevolutions of the new pokémon have been found.

ETAA: at a certain point in the storyline, you will be given a free Ralts who holds a Gardevoirite. Similar to the free Togepi/Riolu you get in Platinum, i would assume.

I've read somewhere that the devs decided not to make any Mega Evolutions for new Pokemon (for now).

So I received my copy and played the game for a couple of hours. I picked Froakie. There are quite a lot of old Pokemon (plus a few from the new region) to catch on first routes. Sadly most of them are not my favorites, but many players will find them interesting. Graphically it's a big step forward (dynamic camera angle's, more detailed environments etc.). The Pokemon models really look nice. The game feels at home, yet it's a completely new experience. Strangely, the 3D effect seems to be quite restricted, and only pop ups from time to time.

I've beat the first Gym leader (nice Gym theme!), and I must say the fight was quite intense. I didn't use Fire or Bird type in this battle, only my Froakie, but at least it was interesting (nice new Bug move used by Viola ). The idea with your characters friends really adds up to the experience, it's more lively that way. Overall, encountered NPC's seem to be more lively then in previous games, but that could only be my impression...

All in all the game might really be a milestone (maybe it's too strong of a word, but it is a step forward) in the franchise, despite some reviewers skepticism, but I must play it a bit more to make a final judgment...

EDIT: Also in the news: Mega Tyranitar, Aggron and Gengar confirmed by CoroCoro. My head spinning because of all those possibilities

there's also MegaPinsir and MegaBanette... which is amazing considering that Dusclops and Scyther already got pseudo-legendary evolutions, so the Shuppet and Pinsir lines are balanced in a way.

Starters Final Forms

Delphox artwork looks really cool imo. I think some haters will change their mind about this Poke. And 'da Magic Stick' has found it's way in Delphox's hands

It seems there really are only 69(?) new Pokemon, but there are many Mega Evolutions (still counting) so I think it's ok.

Now, back to my 3DS

PS: For those who wonder about the special Torchic (It's LIVE as of today). Getting it is super easy, just connect to internet via the in-game menus and select Mystery Gift. Easy peasy!

Playing FireRed right now and my team of Charizard, Zaptos, Articuno, Lapras, Persian and Machoke just got crushed by the first Elite Four guy with the psychic/water/ice Pokemóns. Guess I'm back to leveling up a Bug/Grass Parasect.

edit: Ended up getting an Exeggcutor instead and with the Ice team defeated, the rest was a piece of cake. My winning team:

I've acquired another Gym Badge. This fight was also quite interesting. Then again, to make things even more interesting Gamefreak should think about adding more Pokemon for each Gym Leader, four would be enough. That way, the battles would be more challenging. I mean, 6 Pokemon versus 2 battle, even with type differences, are quite one sided.

So far, I must say I'm really satisfied with the game. They added only 69 new Pokemon (though there are many Mega Evolutions, some of which where probably not discovered by players yet), but at the same time, there are a lot of old Pokemon present, so the game doesn't feel repetitive. One of my biggest complaint about Black 2 was it's boring Trainer Battles. There was not enough Pokemon variety. This time things seem a lot better, as practically each NPC trainer has a different Pokemon. To sum up, X and Y I probably the best games in the series in terms of Pokemon variety, whether your looking for a new Pokemon, or an old favorite... Kudos for Gamefreak...

PS: And probably the first game in the series in which you can have three starters in your party at the same time, without trading...

I've discovered an unexpected side effect of not battling with any non-eventually-Psychic-type-Pokemon: ridiculous XP gain for the Pokemon I DO use. Braixen is nicely over-leveled (as in, he's level 18 while most of my opponents are level 10 or under), and he evolved shortly before the first Gym. This is good because one crit and my only usable Pokemon is out for the count. On the flip side, he's sufficiently over-leveled that he can one-hit KO almost everything we meet, making catching new Pokemon...tricky.

Fortunately I finally got myself a Ralts; she has Trace, and Psychic types have been thin enough on the ground I'm considering getting a male too.

On an unrelated note, Pokemon-Amie has been interesting, although I really wish they had skipped the tutorial on how-to-catch-a-Pokemon and put one in for that instead, as I discovered it was there mostly by accident. Also I have no idea what I'm doing with the Poke Puff things.

Well, it's nothing new actually, starters were always over-the-top when comparing them to other (at least until end-game) Pokemon. You can call them OP if you want. Pokemon was always a game (at least from my experience) in which training your Pokemon too much lead to a situation in which you overwhelmed other trainers/wild Pokemon. Badges are meant to block this advance a bit, but it's not enough. Well, at it's core Pokemon is a "kiddy" game so it's meant too be easy. Those wanting a challenge will probably only find it online. There are usually only a few moments in the single-player experience when you encounter some troublesome Pokemon or trainer...

BTW, I think it would not be that complicated to make the game a bit harder. Just give more Pokemon to Gym Leaders or give some NPC trainers level scaling (based on your parties strength). Of course, to satisfy every player, a possibility to change the games difficulty should be present (from the start).

Hmm, you can get (the new Psychic type) Espurr quite early after the first Gym, Meditite is available not long after. Plus a few other Pokemon can learn Psychic type moves...

Yeah, I've waited a bit thinking that they will somehow introduce those mechanics in-game. It was only by chance that I discovered you can active it from the beginning by switching menus with the stylus

IMO if they just gave the trainers more Pokemon that would be enough; after the first Route I shouldn't be encountering trainers with only one Pokemon unless it's meant to be a joke battle. Level scaling might be a bad idea for less skilled players, as there will be people who can only overcome the various Gym Leaders via being much more powerful. (I've never been a fan of difficulty settings but I suppose that might be workable too.)

I'll have to look around for it then, my search for another Ralts (male or otherwise) was dragging on too long.

Am I the only one to find Lumoise City hard to navigate? It helped a little when I realized that just tapping the directional pad turned the camera but not you, but I haven't found a way to turn Roller Skates OFF.

@B-E-T-A I believe that's a Mystery Gift giveaway.

Speaking of starters, I got Charmander from the Professor. Also ran into the first obviously-a-major-villain character, so things are looking up as far as plot.

1. No, I did too.

2. d-pad for regular walking. Thumb-pad for skating.

Step1: Turn on the WiFi on your 3ds.
Step2: Select Mystery gift and get on to that damn internet.
Step3: ?????
Step4: Profit! (Read free Torchic)

And yeah, Lumiose is bit out there. Damn cameraman, it's like you've gone back 10 years in time.

Edit:
Hey people, does anyone know where I can catch a Venipede in Y? Cause Serebii is saying it's at route 6, but it isn't showing up for me. Is it just rare? Or does it only show up at night? Or something like that?
Help would be apreciated.
