Yay, is it completely redone from scratch without using any original assests from original HoMM3?
What's the GUI lib? Qt? GTK? wxWidgets?

Suprisingly, AVS decided to write it in Pacal. Not sure where it goes, but as you can see, something already works.

Yes it is. Program itself written from scratch, configuration shared with engine.

It is written in pascal using Lazarus, so it by default uses native controls on Windows and OSX and Qt or GTK on Linux (mobile platforms are not supported by design because OpenGL is used as rendering backend and no support for OpenGL ES yet).

That's really good good news! I can't even imagine maps, that could be done using VCMI opportunities: endless amount of monsters, towns, lvl ups. The only missing function for mapmakers will be scripting, after editor will be done.

Hey, just installed it for the first time. While it starts, game runs really slow and I have a quad core with tons of ram. Also, it froze and crashed after some time, no log however. Any help on how to isolate the problem?

Weird, might be operating system issue. Otherwise, no idea.

No, why. I am now responsible for AI (fuzzy logic), there were also many other contributors. AI now is quite easy to expand for everyone.

I've been constantly trying it, but frankly the AI still has a long way ahead to go. Playing a scenario/campaign isn't fun yet. And since it doesn't have multiplayer support (yet), I wonder how exactly it replaced HOMM3 for you?

It's likely that I won't ever fully appreciate the potential of this project, I cannot understand what VCMI does differently than, for instance, WoG (Era). What are (would be) its advantages?

Right now VCMI allows to add unlimited number of towns, creatures, heroes and artifacts without conflicts.

And map objects (with standart functionality) and spells (now adventure spells too) (but without summoning spells for today)

VCMI is open source. You can take sources and make your own fork with all these features you need. The only question is "can you gather team to work on fork or can you make it alone".
