All Civ. games were great in there own time and era of the PC.
Civ. 5: Brave New World has been the most religious bound game, ever.
Plus, Civ. 5 has the best military implementation, ever. The cities are, to a certain point along the very long process of growing them, very hard to approach, from the ground or, even from the sea shores. the only way you can win them is to bombard them from the air or, shell them from outside its influence borders. True military dominance does not start until the 20th century's really advance warfare units are truly in use(Long range artillery and long range rocketry + inter-continental warheads like rockets). Most of the time, when a city is too damaged to sustain any more pummelling, it will turn to your own empire's allegiance + by forcing it to adopt your own religion, it will totally forget its original roots to which it was first founded on.
Civ. Beyond Earth is: Totally out of this world, for real, this time around. I even started the game with my modded faction, right at the very first launch of the game. The Canada Mod was already at version 2 by the time I purchased the game and installed it + registered it through Steam. that mod is on its way to version 4, already. That game was made for Windows 8.x and, not only for Win. 7(SP1 included). So, obviously, you will need an embedded video chipset or, a GPU equipped video card in a PCI-E x16 expansion slot that can process the Win.8.1 DirectX 11 embedded graphics engine. With Win. 7 SP1, you will have to manually download from the downloads page of Microsoft, the latest DirectX 2010-2012 package. Install it then and, only then, you can install your copy of the game + run it in the DX11 format.

An excellent promotions mod. I mean, really useful things, not +5% damage in desert while fighting on grass pangeas. I take my time to promote now, can even rename the armies and use them by specialty.

Played a bit of Civ5 during the winter vacation (about 100 hours) and I have to say that it was really fun. I had gotten to a point where I was on equal footing with the main leaders on Emperor difficulty and Pangea map which was quite a big surprise for me. Last time I faced Emperor was on Continents and it made a huge difference, as I managed to conquer an entire continent by taking down all the AI there. Even though diplomacy was completely compromised, the other leaders couldn't do anything because of geography. And with an expansionist approach and buffing economy I just wrecked everything in late game.
But I haven't finished the game (again) as I lost interest in it. There's no other way to achieve victory now but by buying all the City states for a diplomatic victory which seems a bit unlikely with only 30k gold. Meh, was a good run anyway.

I had immense fun playing Japan as a medieval warmonger type of person, but the real fun started when I played Venice (oh god I love venice) and Germany. Venice is just everything I could ever want, I got a lot of hate from my 3 buddies that I ususally play with (despite my enourmous early advantage being based on luck TT). Basically my capital was almost totally surrounded around the 5 tile mark (by land) by mountains, and then by city states beyond that. My army size was mediocre, but I always had the best units thanks to 3 military city states. And the gold, omg I was swimming in gold, 100g plus a turn early medieval/late classical era. I got invaded by two of my friends, one was marginally successful as he managed to actually penetrate into my lands, and the other met utter disaster. My other buddy sent an army of swordsmen and composite archers, but the entire horde got cut apart by all my city states, I think 3 of them sent their men against him lol, and finally when he tried to flee, I bought the coastal city state and they ended him.
As for Germany, greatly loving the huge army size that they start with, they can go for virtually anything, diplomacy/domination hell even cultural/science victory if they really wanted. Religion combined with diplomacy is extremely powerful in my current game, I managed to use my faith reserves to supplement my normal army production when my friend invaded with 12 elite (lvl 8 jesus) keshiks. I lost 7 pikemen 9 horsemen 3 composite bowmen, 1 general and 1 catapult, and only killed 8 of his keshiks and 2 of his general, goddamn hit and run in a bloody jungle. I won in the end, despite my high losses thanks to faith lol, just shat out army after army and threw them against the damn keshiks, had he invaded a couple of turns later I would've had knights and perhaps my losses would've been less. Note all my pikemen were from bandit camps, either upgraded spearmen or just pikemen, sadly they do not do 50% bonus damage to the goddamn keshiks which is just stupid.
Anyway, licked my wounds and have a huge surplus faith incase of another emergency like that (get like 40 plus fait a turn and faith cost of units is only double of production which is amazing). Got my knights out so I can stand up to the keshiks. My friend was mighty pissed though, he spent a long time training his keshiks for a lighting victory, but the jungle plus simultaneous turns meant that he couldn't do the unbeatable harass strat that he worked out vs the ai. Still I lost a ****ton of units, so I don't much care for his whining, I ain't going to roll over like some damn computer . He's harassing the weakest of my friends who chose to play with aztecs that he's rather unfamiliar with. Gonna form the 3rd Reich and push the barbarians into the sea!

BE has been patched for awhile now to allow those who do not have DX11 capable graphic cards to run the game.
Some mods are available now that I highly recommend.
The SMAX mod adds Alpha Centauri factions and I cannot recommend it enough. The factions are very unique and integrate fairly well with the original sponsors.
The Awesome Sponsors mod which greatly enhances the original sponsors by making their starting bonuses really powerful. For example, Space France now gets culture for each kill, Space Africa gets health for each city it has, and Space Russia starts with titanium and other advantages to really emphasize its satellite production.
The Awesome Loadout mod gives players even more options when selecting what loadouats their sponsors will have. Want to be able to create Wolf Beetles? Check. Want zero intrigue in your capital? Check. Want to start with a lesser-thorium reactor? Check. There are many different options that add a lot of variety to the game.
I recommend these mods mainly because Beyond Earth is still quite lacking compared to Civ 5. I understand Civ 5 has had more time to be worked on and several expansions, but BE could have been so much greater at release. I really hope expansions can turn it into a game I love as much as Civ5. In the interim, the mods certainly help.

Currently playing as Oda Nobunaga with a conquest / cultural approach and it's a lot of fun. The only thing I dislike is how in anticipating some difficult times I set my AI opponents to only Emperor, which as a challenge I find underwhelming.
Oh, and nice mods Sal

indeed. I'd go as far as to say go for H5 vanilla. Not very deep and gets real boring real fast but it's very easy to understand and learn.
In other words, get Civ5 complete.

70 new promotions MOD, you will mostly never run out of choices. Some are OP and crazy, it is possible that if you seek for perfect balance, this will not fit. But if you want to give to AI deity a hard time, you might enjoy it as alternative. I am a big fan of Heroes III game, so several promotions have borrowed names from its skill system. Mod comes with its own crossover promotions, I tried to optimize the possible incoherences from the promotion tree switch.
Note:
3 mutually exclusive promotions to pick: Wisdom, Entertainer and Mysticism. When you select one, the others two will no longer be available for that army. They give faith, culture and science points after kill. The values depend on the enemy unit strength and will be low in early eras, but will grow with time. A few promotions need industrial era to unlock, don't stress.
DOWNLOAD from civfanatics
Or get it from STEAM
Place it into Documents/Civ5/Games/mods. You will also need DLL - Various Mod Components (v 66) from HERE.
Overview (don't ask me to design a comprehensible tree, it would take ages)
map preview:
Advertising pics were taken on a test map with all techs available, which explains strange things like horseman having access to "nuke immune" promotion.

Guess what happens when you battle a lot then you run out of promotions? Game over, you can't finish turn. I mean, is some virus affecting developers today so they can't imagine such simple issues?
I have my infantry reach level 46 on deity/raging barbs, then game asks me to promote to 47 but there is no promotion left. As long as I don't promote, the END TURN is not available
Recalls me Heroes III and its ghost levels. But that was 1998.

I have experienced the same issue following an event that game me upgradeable Nukes. There were no promotions at all and I couldn't end turn. At least level 46 is not usually as accessible to get.

Well, it is not about how high is the level, but game mechanics. If you run vanilla game, there are 150 promotions in all, so you will run out at level 20 or so. If you add promotions mod, this double the levels required, but the screwed mechanics still same: when you run out, you can't end turn.

Maybe that's why they added promotion saving as an advanced option? Not much of a fix, more of a workaround.
Now I'm wondering if this also happens to policies.
