1. The 10 Laws on "How to behave in the Heroes Community"

1. Read the Code Of Conduct which explains what's allowed and (especially) what's not allowed in the forum.
2. Respect your fellow forumers, and talk to them in a nice manner.
3. Before you post, make sure what you want to say and state it as clearly as possible to avoid confusion.
4. Don't resurrect old and dead topics if you haven't got anything new to add to them (i.e. read through them and think twice).
5. Before posting a new Topic, make sure there are no other topics covering the same subjects.
6. Instead of making a new topic for a small question, rather use the already existant Questions Topic.
7. When posting a new Topic, make sure the title is discriptive as to what the topic is about. This helps other members to easily decide whether they want to read through it or not.
8. When you quote a topic with a lot of pictures or other load-heavy contents, please delete these from the original message.
9. Respect the wishes of the Moderators. If you feel that they are unreasonable, leave a message in this feedback thread, or send them an instant message to solve the issue. There will often be an explanation that you might not know of.
10. Be positive.

2. What are the yellow and red stars?

For a full description of these features, I refer to the Community FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions). Here is a short review:

Yellow stars correspond to the member's post count. Members start with no yellow stars and can get up to seven yellow stars. Each yellow star amount has a rank associated with it, see section 2.1.
Yellow stars come automatically, and don't show anything about the quality of the work of the poster, only the amount.

Red Stars correspond to the quality of the member's posts. Posts of particular outstanding quality (top 2 % in forum) will be awarded a Quality bonus and will be marked with a Red Star to show other forumers where to look for quality work. The number of red stars below your fellow forumers avatars correspond to their total number of Quality bonuses (or QP's) (see section 2.3 for more).
Members with less than 2 red stars in their status will have received quality penalties for breaking the Code of Cundoct (see above). For effects of red stars, read below.

2.1 How do I get/lose yellow stars?

As mentioned above, you get yellow stars by posting. Yellow stars depend on your post count as follows:

1-20 posts: No yellow stars. Rank: Tavern Dweller.
  > 20 posts: 1 yellow star. Rank: Hired Hero.
  > 50 posts: 2 yellow stars. Rank: Adventuring Hero.
  > 120 posts: 3 yellow stars. Rank: Known Hero.
  > 300 posts: 4 yellow stars. Rank: Famous Hero.
  > 800 posts: 5 yellow stars. Rank: Supreme Hero.
  > 2000 posts: 6 yellow stars. Rank: Legendary Hero.
  > 6000 posts: 7 yellow stars. Rank: Undefeatable Hero.

Posts refer to post count. Post count is affected by the following things:
  - If you send in a post and the previous post in that thread was not your own, then your post count is increased by 1.
  - If you send in a post and the previous post in the topic is your own, then your post count stays the same.
  - If you send in a post and the two previous posts in the topic are your own, then your post count is reduced by 3.
NOTE: If you've made a reply to a thread, and want to make a new one then you can edit your post to avoid the penalty. To Edit a post you must log in using the user name you had when you made the post. The "Edit Post" link will then appear at the end of each post you've made.
Trouble-shooting tip if the link does not appear even though you are logged in: When you log in the user name is not case sensitive. However, the "Edit Post" link does not appear if you are logged in with another capitalization of the user name than the one you used when you made the post.

2.2 Yellow stars and custom Avatar.

In order to get a custom Avatar you need two yellow stars. Each member can ask for only one custom Avatar. The size of the Avatar is restricted to 2kB. More information on Avatars and Avatar reservation is in the FAQ.

The option to reserve an Avatar becomes available when you have two yellow stars when you edit your Profile. (If you do not have two yellow stars then the option to reserve an Avatar will not appear when you edit the profile.)

2.3 How do I get red stars (quality points)?

The forum guidelines says that quality points should be awarded to the 2% top posts. Red stars will earn you a new Prefix as follows:

0-2 QP's: 2 red stars. Prefix: No rank.
  3-7 QP's: 3 red stars. Prefix: Promising.
  8-14 QP's: 4 red stars. Prefix: Responsible.
  15-24 QP's: 5 red stars. Prefix: Honorable.
  25-50 QP's: 6 red stars. Prefix: Admirable.
   > 50 QP's: 7 red stars. Prefix: Praiseworthy.

It should be noticed that quality is subjective and the moderator reserves the right to judge what is good quality. Therefore, quality points is usually something which you will not get with any predictability unless a post is outstanding.

Getting quality points is not only a matter of posting things which has a good content, but it's also about avoiding things that are breaches of the code of conduct. Most minor breaches of the code of conduct will not result in penalties.
NOTE: Moderators are overall good at keeping notes and remembering the good things you've done along with the bad things.

2.4 Benefits with red stars.

Three red stars removes flood-protect when editing.
Four red stars removes your flood-protect.
Five red stars allows you to rate topics in the forum.

3. Temple of Ashan

3.1 Which topics belong to this Forum?

The following topics are on-topic for the Temple of Ashan:
- News about Heroes 5 Patches and Expansions.
- Discussions about the game, including in-game experiences or more general aspects of the game.
- Note that discussion about wishes for future editions of the game belong to the Altar of Wishes, although the boundary between these two fora can be difficult to define precisely.
- Discussions about current and possible Mods (Modifications) for the game should be taken to the Modders Workshop.

All the items listed in the Table of Contents for the Temple of Ashan are examples of topics that are on-topic for the Temple of Ashan.

4. How do I search for existing topics?

You can search the Heroes Community using the HC Search Engine, where you will be able to see whether certain topics have been discussed before.

In order to make this forum orderly, the Moderators encourages users to search the forum for a relevant topic and revival of old topics instead of creating a new one. Most of the more common topics are included in the Index for the Temple of Ashan, so a member should look through that thread to find something related. Members are also encouraged to look through the 100 most recent topics on the Temple.

The main reason for this is that the forum currently has no way to merge two threads, so creating a duplicate topic will place very similar discussion in two different threads and will make it harder to find things in the forum.

5. Answers for some common Heroes 5 questions

- A Fan made Manual is available for free download here. This is the best place to start, if you have questions to the game!

- The Questions Topic is where people put minor questions, and also contains a FAQ section (Frequently Asked Questions) on Heroes 5 issues.

- You will find almost all information about the newest and older version of the game at Age Of Heroes. This site contain information about factions, creatures, heroes, skills, and much, much more!

- As of October 16th 2007, Heroes 5 standard version has been released with 5 patches, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 (including all previous patches!),  1.41, and 1.5. Furthermore, the first Expansion pack Hammers of Fate has been released with one patch, 2.1. The second expansion pack, Tribes of the East, was released in central Europe october 12th - to read more about TotE, read here.

Patches can be dowloaded here - make sure you download the correct version for your language of the game.

Could you change the number of posts required to start a new topic? I've already posted over ten times and it has only let me create two topics. It's very frusterating when I type in everything only to find that the message board did not let me create a new thread.

Hi, for now I'd like to keep it this way (1 thread per 10 posts). You only need a few more posts to start another thread.

This helps to keep the forums very clean, structured and organised, encouraging newcomers to post in existing threads. I don't think this applies to your threads, but we need a system that works automatically for everybody. However you make a good point about not being warned in advance - I've made a note to change it so that you get a warning before typing the new thread, not after.

Another way to bypass this restriction is when you get 3 quality bonus points on your posts.

this no new threads unless posted 10 replies seems to be intended to limit the community to the regulars and to thwart new members/players.

Example 1.

A new user has some issue, be it Hardware, game help or whatever.  He registers and posts.  Gets some answers.  COOL.  Has another problem.  Tries to post a new question.  BURN no option.

Example 2.

A long time member posts a specific thread about specific details about specific strategies.  All long term members have lots of input.  The new player to the game may not.  He's new.  So he can't build up his post counts effectively.

Example 3.  New user uses the Search function.  New user sees a boatload of data all not useful.  Maybe he get's lucky in Page 13 of search.  But in the end no answer.  At least that's how I have found the search feature...

Seems like a case of High School style inclusion to cliques or the lack thereof.

The 1 thread per 10 post count has indeed been an overprotective rule, as commented by several people to date. I've lowered it to 1 per 5 and added a bit more description to the error message. I hope the new formula achieves a good balance of preventing forum flooding and not restricting genuine new contributors.

I think it's pretty amazing how little acrimony there is here in this forum.  The bodies that contribute tend to do pretty well at stating their arguments and respecting each other's opinions.

I would, however, like to see more qps applied to some of the contributers here.  Alcibiades is pretty good but Doomforge blows me away with his compelling work.  I like strong opinions and the weight of reason behind them.

Do these guys a favor and throw them the carrot they deserve for the contributions they make here.

Moderator's Log 10-04-2007

As most of you have noticed, I have engaged in an intensive forum cleaning in the last month or so, which is now finished. At the same time, I have read through the recent threads of the forum, and have realized that some of the great contributions have not quite received the attention they might have deserved. As an experiment, I will introduce a monthly summary of the activity in the forum, which will bring mention of the most memorable posts, topics or events of the month.

February 2007
February saw the release of the new set of patches, 1.41 and more interestingly, 2.1, which brought exciting new changes to the Training system and Necromancy skill. This triggered some interesting debate on how these skills could further be changed, and also brought this inspiring review of The New Necromancer by Istari.

Another hot topic on the board in February were the discussions on the various creature types and the ellite units in each, started by VokialBG: Shooters, Casters and Tanks. Each topic brought many quality contributions from a lot of forumers, and kudos to Vokial for starting this.

Finally, february brought a lot of interesting ideas or wishes for the next patches.

March 2007
Without question, the hot topic of the Temple in March was the Weekly Quiz hosted by TDL and Elvin (and even occasionally by myself ). Great and entertaining work, that hopefully will get more rounds of chalenges (if we can come up with the questions!). We all had a very interesting discussion about Luck and Morale and about the possibilities of changing the Spells in a more general sense.

Finally, the last couple of months have spawned a number of great tactical guides and game feature reviews. Worth checking out, if you want to learn about the finer details of the game, are:

Strategy guides:
Haven Strategy Guide by Doomforge.
Dungeon Strategy Guide by ZombieLord.
Dungeon Strategy Guide by Feluniozbunio.
Academy Strategy Guide by Doomforge.
Rune Magic Strategy discussion by Darkeye.

Creature reviews:
Inferno Creature Review by Doomforge.
Necropolis Creature Review by VokialBG.
Necropolis Creature Review by TheDeath.
Fortress Creature Review by GenieLord.
Renegade Creature Review by GenieLord.
Neutral Creature Review by GenieLord.
Creature Ability cross-class discussion by VokialBG.

Hero Reviews:
Necromancer Review by VokialBG.
Warlock Review by Doomforge.
Runemage Review by Darkeye.
Creature Specialist cross-class discussion by Doomforge.
Hero Specialist cross-class review – Dark Side and Light Side by Darkeye.

Moderator's Log 02-05-2007

April 2007
April was the month where the new expansion pack Tribes Of The East was announced for release this fall, and this has been the most hot topic in the Temple this month. We have had threads collecting the known facts about the expansion, threads with wishes for the addon, a discussion on whether the Behemoth should be back with the Orcs or not, a a pollabout the same, a discussion of the new alternative upgrades feature, and guesses for which alternatives we will se.

Beside that, the month has offered several interesting strategy discussions. These range from the very serious and matter of fact to the more light hearted and mischievous - worth mentioning are the following contributions:
Inferno Insight by Doomforge.
Academy Adcanced Strategies by TowerLord.
Sylvan Strategies - a more open discussion.
Haven Creature analysis by Radar.
Renegade Review + Tactics from GenieLord.
Frustrating Strategies and Combos - a more light hearted contribution from Elvin.
HoMM Chronicles - another very light hearted review of the game series by Elvin.

Finally, the month have seen several discussions on game features and internal workings:
A new Retreat system? - a suggestion from vorticity.
The Ultimate Skills discussion - a discussion on the workings of the Ultimate Skills started by ElliteKill.
Is War Machines (the skill) overpowered? - a discussion on the War Machines skill and its impact on creeping.
Duel Matchups - a discussion on the Duel Heroes of dfortae.
How do you play ...? - a creature specific strategy discussion thread started by Lesij.
The Best Creature with No Retaliation - the return of VokialBG's popular "Best Creature" discussion series.

Server Move
Heroes Community have been moved from one server to another. Unfortunetely, a number of posts made between thursdag evening and friday noon have been lost, read more here. If you have any questions regarding this, or feel that some of your contributions have been lost, please follow the link to know how to solve that.

Moderator's Log 05-06-2007

May 2007
In may, again, the Hot Topic of the Temple has been the continuous tidbits of information offered on the Tribes Of The East expansion. Elvin has done an excellent job on collecting all the relevant information in the masterpost of the TotE Announcement Thread (well, I've lend a hand every now and then also). The first Alternative Lineups have come out this month, which has resulted in increased activity also with Guessing The Alternatives - some members have taken a very serious approach to this, others a more humorous one.

Another important event of this month was the release of Patch 1.5, and work with the Duel Editor has spawned several additions to the official duel hero line-up - make sure to check out dfortae's Complete Duel Hero line-up and Darkeye's Necromancer Duel Hero line-up if dueling is your thing. And last, but not least, less not forget this interesting (albeit frightening) insight into the workings of the Artificial Intelligence of the game.

Server Move 2

Moderator's Log 14-07-2007

About users with multiple accounts and posting policies
Every now and then, there come new members by the forum who don't bother with reading the rules and Code of Conduct (CoC) of the Community. Sometimes, unfortunately, this results in people behaving in a way that is annoying for the other forumers. I will therefore use this opportunity to stress the following points: According to the CoC, users are not allowed to have multiple usernames unless other has been agreed with the Moderators of the forum.

Furthermore, I will encourage new users to consider the posting policy with regard to ancient topics that are now dead (i.e. last answer is several months old). Topics are allowed to be resurrected, but please only do so if you feel you have something new and relevant to add to the topic. If this is not the case, leave the topic dormant, because it ended up that way originally when people lost interest in it. With more than 20 pages of old topics, it's very easy to drown the forum in irrelevant threads.

Moderator's Log 12-08-2007

Summer 2007
There's not been much to report for the last months. Summer's on us, and there's been the expected drop in activity on the board. Everybody are tripping around, waiting for the release of Tribes Of The East (which is still scheduled to September 28 according to most sites). Naturally, there has been a lot of discussion about the contents of this release; as always, all the officially confirmed information is in the master thread of our Tribes Of The East thread.

Apart from that, we've had some interesting discussions on the systems of magic in the current and previous chapters of HoMaM. Read up on the Secrets Of Mana to get an overview of the evolution of magic through the games, or participate in the discussion on Spell Availibility to voice your oppinion about the different spells and schools of the current Heroes chapter.

Moderator's Log 07-09-2007

August 2007
One of the hot topics of August, while the release of Tribes Of The East is drawing closer, has been various concept artworks and designs that have surfaced. A good place to start if you're interested in game artworks is the Artwork Hookup thread, where Dexter provided a serious of very exciting concept images page 2 and onwards, and the thread about Hero Portraits, where Geewai linked to an almost full set of beautiful large-size artowrks for all of the Heroes in the game.

Apart from that, August brought the usual amount of buzzling and speculations about the upcoming expansion - this day of writing, the Tribes Of The East thread is up to more than 140 pages! - and we finally got the preview trailer (check page 134 of said thread). Also, we had some very good discussions of various tactics in the game, particularly Sylvan and Haven factions were hot topics in the end of the month.

Moderator's Log 18-10-2007

So finally, after what seems like an eternaty of waiting, TotE has been released to those lucky of us who live in Western Europe ... The rest of you will have to wait for a little longer. There is a new Tribes Of The East thread, where you can discuss the expansion and the new feature, and where Sfidanza will also report updates in the Heroes 5 sections of Age Of Heroes.

The first topics giving overviews on new features have already arived - not surprisingly, forum long-timers Elvin and Doomforge have already contributed with reviews of the new Stronghold Heroes and Skill Trees, and the future will probably also bring Stronghold strategy guides, as well as revised guides to the old factions, considering the new options available through new skills and alternative upgrades. The Campaign Walkthrough section has also been updated with threads for the new campaigns.

As expected, the new release of the expansion have brought a lot of new forumers to the board, which is always nice. I would however like to ask the new members to take a minute to gain familiarity with the forum guidelines in the top of this thread, so that their contribution to the forum will be best possible for themselves and the rest of us.

Moderator's Log 18-10-2007

New Temple Of Ashan Moderator
As some of you may have noticed this morning, Elvin has obliged to pick up the Moderator sword to help us out with the moderating duties in the Temple. As Elvin is probably a much more helpful and kindly soul than I am myself, this will probably not cause any trouble for anybody here, but I hope you'll all welcome him in good spirit.

Merry Christmas
As Christmas is on the door-step, I'll take this opportunity also to wish all Temple Of Ashan and Heroes Community members in general a Merry Christmas.

That was all for now ... please leave your feedback in this thread if you have any comments to the Mod team.
