There's a White Two Way Sea Portal sitting on top of what is made to look like a patch of kelp but is in fact a weird form of Purple Portal One Way Exit (or a two way portal, depending on which message you trust - the description or the tooltip).

Now - I know you can modify objects to look like other objects. I wonder if it's the case here (perhaps to enable some unusual portal traversal mechanics?) or if that's a bug or something else entirely. Anyone from the HotA team cares to comment?


It seems like you have some kind of bugged version - there should be a normal sea portal there. I would suggest trying to re-download version 1.5.3 from the official link and re-install

I'm not saying it's weak, I'm saying skeleton farming is already strong enough with other towns. For me it would make sense if it was way better when Necropolis is your starting town but I watched the stream you posted of Gomunguls with Thant and VLs. That part was more of an answer to Lth posts)
But necro is already stronger with necropolis. Just the 5% from amplifier, the inbuilt transformer and the starting amount from 2 heroes is enough of an advantage. Farming with other towns is still possible, but would require some special conditions, like having a cloak or boots, possibly also having a necro village and an outward transformer

There is too much inaccurate balance statements in this thread that I've lost the spirit to fully answer it all (not anyone's fault, just my current state) , but in short: revolution is mostly right about Tower, but we'll see the state after the magic rebalance. Lth is mostly wrong about necro and I have videos from pro players amassing tons of skeletons without Thant or Galthran, but even without a ton, just using vampires you can win maps. Necro strength (not weakness) is potentially a problem, but we'll see after magic rebalance. Also, demon-farming is not always beneficial - one pays with a ton of tempo (in terms of heroes and movepoints used) and timer for those demons. Unlike skeletons.

All in all, I only see problem,s with T3 and T7 due to HP issues. If they get a bit more HP (and the Wraiths a bit better stats compared to Wights), it should be a fine lineup.
The one I feel is far weaker is Fortress.

Powerful town with weak heroes: Many starting possibilities and game variation since you have freer choice.

Weak town with 1 or 2 op staring heroes: Gameplay is repetitive since there is just one way to do it "right"


90% of towns rely solely on 1 or 2 heroes to really reach their potential. But Necropolis is rather moderate in this sense - as indicated by a lot of Clavius/Charna games in the early days.

What you're probably doing wrong is heavily underusing vampire lords. And Thant. Also, probably not splitting your army effectively enough. These are the most common mistakes with Necro nowadays.

seems like Necropolis is stronger than i previously thought. such extremes are only possible with Thant however, where you have the possibility of resurrecting hundreds of them at a time. no matter how many you lose, if you have mana you end up winning the battle without a single loss. naturally, if Jebus Cross template allows Galthran, Thant is still considerably a better choice for a starting hero, i would think. playing a Death Knight Necropolis would get pretty weak pretty fast, since you end up losing Skeletons by the masses e.g. Dragon Utopia, Conservatory, and raise only a fraction afterwards

so Thant is the one and only exception that makes Necropolis a viable faction, as of my understanding

maybe up the Necromancy percentages and nerf Thant instead?

like Animate Dead requiring Earth magic to be permanent, as an example

Thant (and Luna for that matter) are somewhat limited in tempo by the amount of mana they have.

Isra games are a bit harder to find nowadays since Thant became the default starter after the rise of magic, but here is an example of one from the earlier days: https://youtu.be/9N-JlezjFMM?t=3h52m50s
He didn't get 12 vampires week 2, only 10, which is significant, he also made some big mistakes and eventually went too far and lost everything, but I think it is evident where he could've played a bit safer and still have a very decent tempo. Notice how even after losing his whole army he gets 250+ skeletons just in a few days. With normal tempo he would have about 500-600 skeletons mid-week-3 and that is enough to take a tope with a hero like he had.

Maybe you can help me with a little problem I have, then.
When I play Necro, I always do the same tactic: Getting Vamp lords ASAP, and starting clearing stuff (since Vamp Lords are insanely powerful). My problem starts when I get out of the initial starting area.
I always have a secondary hero following me, to take on the raised skeletons, as well as, storing the rest of my troops (lichs, black knights, maybe bone dragons and seldom wights). That works against creep good enough (using the complete army against mechanical, elementals and undeads), but once I meet an enemy hero, the problem starts.

Due to the low visibility, there is a high chance that either of my heroes can be ambushed. Loosing my secondary hero, even without my army, is a pain, since I actually need him for my vampire tactic. In return, if the enemy ambushes me while I only have vamp lords... Well, often thats the end.

Another small problem is, that my secondary tends to lag behind, meaning, that I actually need to cripple my speed in order to switch back and forth. Any suggestion how I could do that better?


Learn how to effectively manage 8+ heroes. Usually it differs each day - which exact one of them is picking up skeletons after your vampires. Sometimes it's okay even to dismiss or lose those additional skeletons - that hero's goal may be to break some crucial guards, not to farm additional skeletons. Prioritize.

Also, vamp lords are usually all right if you get them early week 2, no need to rush them week 1 - learn how to get by with only liches and skeletons early on (while still having close to no losses).

Here would be a really good place to place some good educational videos, but alas, I know of no good ones in English AFAIK (planning to make one). Some demonstrations on heroes3.tv should help (including the one above), although most of those are Russian with a splash of Polish.

After dying the hero is considered having no army. Hero with no army has max speed (2k mp), so unless you make him spend a night in one of your tavern slots with that single unit he now has (probably a recruited local drunkard) - his speed will be at that maximum.

That's a commonly used feature for when you need to dig up an especially fast hero

If you do so, please rethink Cove's grail. I reported this before, if other players have Cove creatures (or neutral armies related to Cove) they get the same creature bonus as the player who built the grail. This is inconceivable but easily verifiable.


This is how it is intended to work. Same as Inferno grail giving the bonus to all Inferno towns, not just the one who built the grail.
